I attend Bluevalley Northwest where I am in my last year. I play baseball both for the school and outside it. I have thought about many career paths and wanted to look into speech, so I decided to try CAPS teacher education to try and see what a path could hold in the near future.

SPEECH PATHOLOGY LEARNING

During this short amount of time I got to look into and understand what speech teachers do in the school environment. This semester I studied under three speech teachers who showed me the foundations of what they do everyday. This eye opening experience showed me a possibility for a future career path.

STUDENT OBSERVER

While I was observing speech teachers I noticed a common theme that could be made. The use of games in the classroom shifted the focus on the games instead of what they are having trouble with. Games shifted the attention to a fun activity than trying to correct a issue.

FIRST TIME STUDYING SPEECH

The first time that i walked into a speech pathologist room I was blown away by the sensory. I felt like kids could come in and feel free because there was so much color and it had warm environment that just made me feel like something special was coming. That is exactly what a speech teacher does; they change a life to try and adapt these kids to the best they can be.

Today was a big day for my counseling project because I need to gather information for the students to feel more comfortable talking to adults. My group has a couple of ideas that we remembered from our schools that helped. First I worked on having a system where students could drop off questions unanimously. I remembered an activity that helped students during middle school, where there was a mailbox with a little slip and students could drop off notes that the teacher could talk about as a group. I feel like this system could really help the students and keep the identity of that person a secret.

We met with Chris today to talk about our activities that we developed. I talked about my mailbox idea and tried to really push the idea that it would be confidential. Chris really liked the idea and how it would be a simple and fast system to implement. Since JJ wasn't at the meeting Chris is going to send JJ the idea and the minor changes we made that helped the idea. The next idea that our group had was implementing a lunch buddy system where every student would have someone during their lunch period. This would help the students with not being alone and always having someone to talk to.

During our meeting I was assigned to talk to a counselor about activities that could help students with severe cases of trauma. I scheduled the meeting a few days ahead where I could prepare questions. I walked into the meeting and started asking my questions when my counselor talked about how she didn't have any activities for that trauma that severe. I was shocked to hear that and really showed me how we live in a bubble. It's crazy to think that a professional counselor doesn't have any ideas for students with such severe cases. This meeting really showed me how we are setting the ground for these kids and how we are making the first steps for a better school experience.

Today was my first time back in the classroom this semester. I was able to go back to Ms. Healy over at BRE where a few kids remembered who I was. I was happy to see some of the progress that these students made over the past couple of months. I was excited to be back in a classroom because it had been so long since my past observation. A few of the kids that remembered me wanted me to play the game of the day which really made me feel good.

We met with Chris today to run over the action items from the last time that we met. I started off the meeting talking about my meeting with the counselor and how I had prepared all my questions to only be shut down. Chris wasn't even surprised when I told him that they didn't have any activities for severe trauma. He realized that different areas create different environments and our area doesn't have a majority of those severe cases. I was relieved to hear that as well as worried about what we would do for activities.

Today I was at BRE with Ms. Healy to put another observation in the book. Today was unique because we worked with a possible new student. I was eager to see the screening process and how the process works. When Ms. Healy was giving the test I noticed a few ticks; the student have difficulty with his L's, R's and S's. I even picked up on what I thought was ADD which really impressed Ms. Healy. It was so cool for me to see this test and try to pick up on what may be wrong.
